چکیده

[1] In recent decades, the RockyMountainWest has been one of the fastest growing regions in the United States. Headwater streams in mountain environments may be particularly susceptible to nitrogen enrichment from residential and resort development. We utilized stream water chemistry from six synoptic sampling campaigns combined with land use/land cover (LULC) and terrain analysis in geostatistical modeling to examine the spatial and seasonal variability of LULC impacts on stream water nitrate. Stream water nitrate was spatially correlated for longer distances during the dormant season than during the growing season, suggesting the importance of biological retention. Spatial linear models indicated that anthropogenic sources best predicted stream water nitrate in the dormant season, while variables describing biological processing were the best predictors in the growing season. This work demonstrates the importance of (1) incorporating spatial relationships into water quality modeling and (2) investigating stream water chemistry across seasons to gain a more complete understanding of development impacts on stream water quality.

Land use impacts on surface water quality by statistical approaches

Surface waters are the most important economic resource for humans which provide water for agricultural, industrial and anthropogenic activities. Surface water quality plays vital role in protecting aquatic ecosystems. Unplanned urbanization, intense agricultural activities and deforestation are positively associated with carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous related water quality parameters. Multip...

Effects of watershed land use and geomorphology on stream low flows during severe drought conditions in the southern Blue Ridge Mountains, Georgia and North Carolina, United States

[1] Land use and physiographic variability influence stream low flows, yet their interactions and relative influence remain unresolved. Our objective was to assess the influence of land use and watershed geomorphic characteristics on low-flow variability in the southern Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and Georgia. Ten minute interval discharge data for 35 streams (in watersheds from 3 to...

Headwater Influences on Downstream Water Quality

We investigated the influence of riparian and whole watershed land use as a function of stream size on surface water chemistry and assessed regional variation in these relationships. Sixty-eight watersheds in four level III U.S. EPA ecoregions in eastern Kansas were selected as study sites. Riparian land cover and watershed land use were quantified for the entire watershed, and by Strahler orde...

Physiographic gradients determine nutrient concentrations more than land use in a Gulf Slope (USA) river system

Riverine ecosystems are linked to their watersheds, and both land use and physiographic environmental conditions influence nutrient dynamics and water quality. We assessed aquatic nutrients and their relationship with land use and physiographic conditions at multiple spatial scales in the Brazos River watershed (Texas, USA) to examine the interactions between land use and physiography and their...
